About International Klein Blue

International Klein Blue, also known as IKB, is a deep blue hue first mixed by the French artist Yves Klein. Klein created this color in collaboration with a Parisian paint supplier, Édouard Adam, during 1950s. IKB's visual impact comes from its heavy reliance on ultramarine pigment, as well as Klein's artistic vision. The color was specifically formulated to maintain its intensity when dry, closely matching the dry pigment's appearance. Yves Klein patented IKB in 1956. Klein used IKB in many of his art pieces, especially monochrome paintings and sculptures, making it a significant part of his artistic identity. The color is intended to evoke feelings of boundlessness, depth, and the sublime, contributing to the immersive and meditative qualities often found in his work. Nowadays, IKB is still used by many artists.

The color #031EAB, also known as International Klein Blue, presents significant accessibility challenges, especially when used as text on a white background. Its very low luminance of 0.01 makes it difficult for individuals with visual impairments to discern text clearly. According to WCAG guidelines, it fails all contrast ratio tests for normal text (4.5:1) and large text (3:1). To improve accessibility, pair it with very light colors, such as #FFFFFF or #F0F0F0, to achieve an acceptable contrast ratio. For critical text or interactive elements, consider using a lighter shade of blue or a contrasting color altogether. Providing alternative text descriptions for images and using ARIA attributes can further enhance the usability of content featuring this deep blue hue. Remember that accessibility should be a primary consideration when designing digital interfaces.
