International Klein Blue
About International Klein Blue
International Klein Blue, often abbreviated as IKB, is a deep blue hue first mixed by the French artist Yves Klein. IKB's visual impact comes from its heavy reliance on ultramarine, as well as Klein's matte, synthetic resin binder that allows the pigment to maintain its original intensity and texture. The distinctiveness of IKB is readily apparent, its deep blue depth makes the colour stand out against a variety of lighter backgrounds, which gives the colour an ethereal appearance. This colour became Yves Klein's trademark. In May 1960, Klein patented IKB in France (Patent no. 63471).
The color #012BB3, a deep and saturated blue, presents significant accessibility challenges. Its low luminance value (relative darkness) means that it provides very little contrast when paired with lighter colors, particularly white or light grays. According to WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) standards, sufficient contrast is crucial for users with visual impairments, including those with low vision or color blindness. To ensure readability and usability, it is strongly recommended to avoid using #012BB3 as a text color on a light background. If it is necessary to use this color, consider increasing the font size and weight significantly to improve legibility. Alternatively, pair it with a very light color such as a light yellow or a very pale grey to improve contrast. Using this color for decorative elements rather than essential information is also advisable.

Applications
Web Design Accent Color
In web design, International Klein Blue can be used as an accent color to draw attention to specific elements such as buttons or links. However, due to its low luminance, it's best used sparingly and with careful consideration for contrast. It could also be used for backgrounds, but should not be used for displaying text on this background. A possible use case is the background of a loading screen.
Fashion Statement Piece
In fashion, International Klein Blue is a bold and striking color that can be used to create eye-catching outfits. It is often used in statement pieces such as dresses, jackets, or accessories. Its vibrancy adds a sense of playfulness, and it can be combined with a wide variety of styles.
Interior Design Accent
In interior design, International Klein Blue is often used as an accent color to add a pop of color to a room. It can be used on walls, furniture, or accessories to create a modern and sophisticated look. Because of the low lightness, it can make smaller spaces seem small. It is often used in combination with light grey or white to neutralize this effect.
